How can Citrul-Lean support overall health?
As muscles function, energy is produced by the breakdown of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This process generates ammonia as a byproduct. Ammonia is toxic to the body, and high levels can impair muscle function.
To detoxify the ammonia, muscle cells can convert it into less toxic compounds such as urea. The urea is then transported to the liver and eliminated from the body through urine. This process utilizes the amino acid arginine that is most efficiently delivered by citrulline.
When there is not enough detoxifying arginine available to muscle tissue, the ammonia accumulates requiring transfer of ammonia through the blood to the liver which is the primary organ responsible for removing ammonia. Citrulline supports the availability of arginine throughout the cardiovascular system, promoting nitric oxide to enhance blood flow and speed the clearance of ammonia to support muscle health.
As we now know, ammonia is toxic to cells, and high levels of ammonia can disrupt cellular processes and lead to muscle protein breakdown (proteolysis). Ammonia-induced proteolysis occurs partly due to increased activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, which is responsible for protein degradation in muscle cells. The breakdown of muscle proteins can result in the loss of muscle mass and contribute to muscle wasting.
